Moving our bodies and being active is necessary for optimal health and well being. Exercise helps boost our energy, lift our mood and mindset, empowers us towards confidence, and promotes restful nights sleep. But before hitting the trail or treadmill, make sure you are equipped with proper shoes.

The most important piece of equipment when exercising is the right pair of shoes. Proper footwear helps to protect the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back. And since the first point of contact in many exercises happens right at the foot, finding a shoe that is supportive, protective, and appropriate is key.

Steps to Finding the Right Shoe

Don’t buy athletic shoes online.  Go somewhere to try them on at a store that offers assistance in sizing and fitting.
Shop for shoes in the afternoon or evening since the feet expand later in the day.
Wear the same type of socks to the store that you will wear when exercising.
Ask a footwear specialist to watch your stride while walking or running.
Make sure the shoes match the shape of both of your feet (width and length).
Choose a size that allows a 1/2 inch between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
Walk, jog, or run in the shoes to ensure support and comfort.
Be very picky and take your time, even if it means visiting a few stores.
Don’t buy based on appearance.  Buy based on support and how your body feels.

Casual Wear

It is also important to find appropriate and supportive shoes for your everyday shoes.  If you wear the same pair of shoes to work each day, that means you spend 40 or more hours each week walking, standing, and sitting in those shoes.  And if they aren’t comfortable, that may be a sign that your feet, knees, hips, and back are taking a hit as well.

High-Heel Hazards

Women, listen up! In a ten year span there were 123,355 high-heel-related injuries reported and recent stats show this number is on the rise.  Rock the high-heels for special occasions, but stick to a lower heel with a supportive arch for everyday wear.
